Challenge
The club's presence lived scattered across social media with no single, findable home. Anyone curious about the club — a prospective member, a visitor — had to already know where to look, which capped visibility to existing followers rather than reaching new people. In one meeting, a club member put the problem plainly: "what if we have something which would make it easier for people to find us?"
Solution
I talked with around 15 people — mostly informal conversations, largely surfaced during a club meeting — to understand what the site needed to communicate and to check that "hard to find information" wasn't just an internal assumption. Early design directions leaned into more animation and visual flourish, but testing that against the actual goal — helping a stranger quickly understand and trust the club — showed it worked against the goal itself. I pulled back to a simpler layout and calmer color system, aiming for visitors to think "oh, it's GCES Girls Tech," not "wow, what a website."
The developer added more information to the events page than I'd originally scoped, and some animation details shifted in implementation. I understand why — we were working against a deadline to have the site ready before a project showcase ahead of the handover ceremony, so some of that was a reasonable time trade-off rather than a miscommunication.
Impact
The site is live and serving as the club's primary online presence — the first time the club has had a single, canonical home online instead of a scattered social footprint.
